For Emma, Forever Ago This instant

Bon Iver was another one of those artists that come out of nowhere. I heard about them through an automated recommendation and I am thankful I have discovered him. I've never really liked music this slow and folk-like before, but for some reason I really feel like this music speaks to my generation. At the time of this review, I am barely into my 20's and I can really connect with this music. It's a little sad and a little mystic at the same time. Bon Iver makes music that takes you places. And most of the time he takes me to a very very relaxing and enjoyable place.

Unfortunately I can't be 100% passionate about the whole album, yet. It takes a while to grow on you. But immediate and lasting favorites are "Flume", "Skinny Love", and "For Emma". I became attached to those tunes at first listen. The great thing about this album, is that none of the songs are annoying, or bad songs. It's all listenable through and through. I give it 4 stars because some songs are 10X more memorable than others. The other songs will still sooth you and treat you the way good music does. So unlike other albums that have good songs and bad songs. This is an album with all good songs. Some just take us a little higher than others, like my personal favorite "Flume".

Everyone owes this style of music a listen. Here's a great way to start. Bon Iver creates music that's very hard to dislike. It speaks to your heart, and it's easy on the ears. Preview the album, I say. Before long you will have these songs stuck in your head, and your going to want to purchase the album.Get more detail about For Emma, Forever Ago.

The Crane Wife Best Quality

The Decemberists are a great band, but they can never quite seem to make a perfect album. Still, they've made consistently solid attempts, and here is their fourth. If nothing else, THE CRANE WIFE proves Meloy's skill as a songwriter (if there could have possibly been any doubt after PICARESQUE), and displays what the band can do with some higher production values. I think, though, that the album will be most enjoyed by those who are just discovering the Decemberists and haven't listened to their previous efforts.

The album opens and closes well. "Crane Wife 3" is bright, simple, and accessible, and it flows right into "The Island," which is dark, complex, and very prog-rock (over 12 minutes long!). So within the first fifteen minutes we've already witnessed the broad spectrum of Meloy's songwriting ability. There are also already a few annoyances: the segue between the first two songs, which seems a very tenuous connection between otherwise unrelated material. And why is "The Island" only one track? Yes, the three songs may very well be related, but they are also very clearly separate songs. In fact, many of the annoyances of the album stem from its organization as a "half concept album," which is an interesting idea, but not a particularly well-executed one. A bit more about that later.

The middle section of the album sags a bit. "Yankee Bayonet" and "O, Valencia!" both cover very familiar material. Really, Colin, two songs about dead lovers in a row? At least PICARESQUE spaced them out a bit. "The Perfect Crime #2" is actually a fun little experiment, probably the most successful bit of experimentation on the album. Yes, the chorus is a bit annoying, but hey, it at least suggests the Decemberists are versatile. "When The War Came," unfortunately, suggests otherwise. It appears to be some sort of attempt at a harder rock sound, but ends up just being the first truly awful Decemberists song, which is quite sad. I'd rather not discuss it. In fact, why don't we just forget about it because the next song is "Shankill Butchers," which is really lovely--in a creepy sort of way--and one of the best songs here. Then there is the forgettable "Summersong," and then "Crane Wife 1 and 2," which is the reason you buy the CD. I said the album opens and closes well, and indeed, "Crane Wife 1 and 2" is a heck of a way to close an album. It could possibly be the apex of the Decemberists career thus far. It's only marred, slightly, by the fact that the two songs are crammed into one track. Why? In what way does this improve the listening experience? Yes, I understand that they tell a story. In which case, Crane Wife 3 should probably be after Crane Wife 2 in the same track, don't you think? Ah, but then comes "Sons and Daughters" and all my crankiness evaporates. Maybe it's repetitive, and maybe it goes on a bit too long, but who cares when it's this much fun? It's the perfect way to end the album.

Okay, so if you don't want to read all of that: it opens well, closes well, and has a few clunkers in the middle. Oh yeah, and the arrangements are a bit too heavy on synth for my taste. But overall, it isn't better or worse than other Decemberists releases. Same high quality stuff. I'm still waiting for a perfect album, though!Get more detail about The Crane Wife.

Black Winged Bird Get it now!

I'm not sure about her other stuff, but this song's a worthwhile addition to your collection, especially since it's free. It's a nicely done ballad; it's not too sappy or saccharine, her voice isn't too whiny or emotional. It's just right, and a good addition to my "Sleepy" playlist.

The Ultimate Blue Train Buy Now

The cover of the 1997-edition enhanced CD says it needs Windows 3.1 or mac7.1. In some quick tests on a couple of Macs, full install of the the enhanced content required OS9 (OSX10.4), but the video and audio files played fine with current QuickTime (QT7.6/OSX10.5). I don't know what happens on PCs, but I'd guess it's a similar situation (files play but full content won't).Get more detail about The Ultimate Blue Train.

Ropeadope Label Sampler Order Now

This is really 2.5 star rating! The non-jazz cuts were more of the Caribbean/Latin, folk, world, alternative, blue grass, and perhaps funk. There were six cuts that one could call jazz. Those would make this a 4-star rating. The non-jazz cuts hurt an otherwise good sampler. Excuse me there are 3 or 4 songs I need to delete from my Touch.Get more detail about Ropeadope Label Sampler.

An der Schönen Blauen Donau (On the Beautiful Blue Danube), Op. 314: Waltz (from Summer with Monika) Decide Now

I am learning to play this piece on the piano and wanted to listen to a recording to help me with the nuances. Having somehow misplaced my LP of 2001 a Space Oddysey, I searched Amazon's mp3 downloads and found this. It met my requirements and is certainly a decent recording of a timeless masterpiece.

As I said, you can't beat the price!

Lowest Price Soap On A Rope

I have no familiarity with Chickenfoot's music. This track reminds me of late 70's hair-band rock, such as Aerosmith or Foghat. *Let's party* message clear and well sung. "Don't forget to bring your rockin' shoes / grab a toothbrush, soap, and a comb / And you can pick up a little taste - get your favorite buzz on / And you can leave the rest at home"

Very good funky rhythm electric guitar (or more likely it's the bass?) drives the song and the funky, medium fast back beat. Some busy high guitar licks adorn it through the middle. A fun "rocker". That said, if this is the best track on the album (as another reviewer said), then the album *may* not be great. The song is worth a listen, IMO, but somewhere, somehow, lacks something for enduring quality - a "hook"? - to kick it over from a fun listen to an enduring favorite. Could make a good Guitar Heroes track, maybe.

(Just sampled my "Get Your Wings" and I think I found what would make this better [at least for an Aerosmith fan] - more "interplay" or counterpoint between the low rhythmic guitar/bass beat and the higher guitar. It's mostly one or the other, or both playing the same thing, and the high-pitched guitar is more about super-fast licks or scratching. The track needs the higher guitar to play something more controlled in counterpoint to the driving line instead of scritch-scratch.)Get more detail about Soap On A Rope.

Low Price Memento Mori (Amazon MP3 Exclusive Version)

Which is fine. This album will appeal to the religious listeners out there. but i'm done with this album and i could barely get thru the whole thing.
I will admit that i am not a christian. However, i do actually like some of the christian bands out there right now.
For Example, i love Red and Skillet. They're great bands.
I just cant relate when the lyrics really mention christ and jesus by name.
I am not a christian hater by any means. just not an album for me, and i am disappointed that they went this route.
There's a difference with this album versus their previous effort and other christian bands. Their previous album as well as recent albums done by Red and Skillet contain music that speaks to you about hard times, relationships, happy times, etc. and it explains how their spirituality helped them make it through.
Memento Mori does not do that. It is simply an album that preaches to you. Believe or your life is worth nothing.........

Cheap The Bridge

It's not bad for a debut, but it leans a bit too much on the Motown imitations.

While borrowing so heavily from the Motown playbook isn't bad -- the songs are catchy and even entertaining -- it does simply make me want to play the classic songs that she's referencing rather than listen to her tracks.

When she finally steers a bit away from the Motown sound, her songs are sometimes and more point to potentially good albums in the future.

It's a slightly welcoming detour in that she simply doesn't mimic the styles of most R&B-pop female singers these days, but her other tracks tend to sound like Alicia Keys and, at this album's worst, generic pop R&B.

She's a name to look forward to, and hopefully the label will give her chances to grow on subsequent albums, something that labels don't seem to do much anymore.

Buying Some Mad Hope

I loved this CD. Every song on it was great. I hadn't heard of Matt Nathanson before hearing "Come On Get Higher" on the radio. It was catchy so I looked him up and listened to the song clips and it sounded like something I would like so I bought it. I was wrong; it's something I LOVE. I love every song. My very favorite is the last song, "All We Are We Are". I love listening to this on my way home from my stressful job. It's very relaxing and I find myself singing all the way home. Buy Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen - The Album

I can't stop playing this. Both this album and the score for "The Transformers" first movie, are fantastic!

I found out just how much I listen to this in the short time I've had it, because I've received an email from the Zune network that I'm a Bronze listener of Steve Jablonsky.

I'm a huge fan of Hans Zimmer's scores and it seems he and Steve Jablonsky are colleagues. They both write the same type of scores that I love, one's with great melodies and a strong masculine sound.

In a word, "outstanding"!Get more detail about Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen - The Album.

Order Cumbancha Amazon Compilation

Generally speaking, I have always been a little skeptical of the free albums offered through Amazon...but I will usually take the plunge and find at least one or two tracks off of each album that are worth keeping. In this case, however, I was pleasantly surprised by the compilation and have actually kept the album intact. Not to belabor the point, but if you are open minded to world music, are looking for something a little different, or just enjoy good rhythms and beats - then this album is worth checking out...and you certainly can't beat the price!Get more detail about Cumbancha Amazon Compilation.

Blood and Fire Amazon Compilation

Some interesting Reggae music here - certainly worth the FREE price tag.

Ghetto Funk is more jazz than reggae, performed by an old-time reggae performer, Boris Gardner.

No More War is a talking song with a low-volume reggae beat in the background, supporting what the title says. A surprising entry for a sampler, as it is really a political statement and not a piece of music.

But the others are pleasant enough reggae songs - I can never have enough reggae in my library.

Surprisingly, a few of the songs have the "info" tabs greyed out inside of iTunes, so that the genre can't be changed from the given "International" genre to "Reggae". I don't know what that is about. I've not seen that before. So, I can't get these into any of my Reggae playlists based on genre. That is a bummer. Oh well, they'll show up in my "everyday playlist", but still not where I want them in my library.

Overall Four Stars.

I'm a 24yr old musician and music educator on Long Island, New York, USA, and I'm constantly listening to music. Glee: The Music, Volume 1 Get it now!

Okay, I'll admit, I got excited about this CD just because a bunch of my favorite songs were on it. Some of these songs (such as "Somebody to Love") were sung orginally by all men. What fun is that to a girl who wants to be able to sing along with it and not feel like I'm posing as a guy? Yes, I dance around my room with this cranked up, singing as loud as I possibly can, when no one else is home. But, honestly, if you don't want to do that while listening to this CD, then there's something wrong with you. I'm sorry, but that's the way it is. :)

These songs are not and probably will never be as good as the original versions, but when they are sung in the show, the students have so much fun with it that I (at least) can overlook that one problem. I love the show and this soundtrack was a must-have for my collection. You won't be disappointed.Get more detail about Glee: The Music, Volume 1.
