With this album Rihanna showed that she is much more than a pretty face who can belt out a catchy tune: Rated R has both depth and strength. Rihanna dared to step out of the cookie cutter pop-star mold by challenging herself and, more importantly, her fans. Every track is a departure from anything we have experienced in her previous albums. It's edgy, soulful and moving. I dare say it is the best album of the year thus far and 2009 is almost over.
In my opinion most of the negative criticism is coming from fans who are resistant to change. She grew as an artist and by doing so she may have outgrown some of her fans but she will surely pick up many new ones. I certainly count myself among them.
